Rachel De JoodeCostumes for performances by Schubot/Gradinger at HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin, TANZ Bremen; Moving in November, Helsinki; Botanical Gardens Pankow, Berlin (2018)
The desire to acknowledge and interact with non-human beings brings Jared Gradinger and Angela Schubot into a deep immersion with nature and its inherent intelligence. Rather than with a traditional dance piece, with YEW they co-create an experimental evening of intense encounters with a plant nature, which they can only describe as a “soilless garden.” For the costumes, Claudia Hill transforms garments with plant dyes and weathering. The traces of wear convey an aesthetic of imperfection and transience.
