CLAUDIA HILL

She is the only one who let us photograph the idea board for the season she has just started. The wall, where she pins up images and ideas as they come to her, will soon be filled without a single gap.

With her friend, photographer Ariko Inaoka, she has worked on various collaborations, including shooting the short film “Fall/Winter Collection 2000.” Pictured here is the two of them at work on a “T-shirt” art book they are planning together.

A wool jersey top with a deep open back. “Some designers say fashion is art, but to me clothing is beauty within movement.”

Several doll sized garments hang from the ceiling of the studio. “First I try out the concept on a doll,” she says, and then it takes shape at human scale, just like a marionette.

Pleasant music is always playing in Claudia’s studio in Tribeca. True to her background as a dancer, Claudia moves around with light, agile ease.

A one piece dress from the fall/winter collection with a hood shaped like a pea pod. Friends who are dancers modeled it in the show. “The clothes are three dimensional, so a model who just walks can’t fully express them.”

“The reason I became a designer is Miguel’s fault.”

Claudia says this half joking. She had long lived near “Horn” and was friendly with Miguel and Douglas, who ran the shop at the time, and with Pierrot, who worked the counter. When Miguel saw her wearing a dress she had made herself, he asked, “Why don’t you bring it into the shop?” That was what got her started making clothes.

She debuted in fall/winter ‘99. Claudia, who had been a costume designer, knew next to nothing about the collection calendar. “I showed my first show in April. I didn’t even know the fall/winter season had shows in February.”

Even so, a buyer from Barneys called the very next day. That was before Miguel set out to become a designer himself. Since then she has shown five collections, and her reputation has been steady thanks to designs that are both original and refined.

“I don’t follow what’s happening in the world, and my clothes aren’t trendy either. I don’t understand at all what everyone is doing now, copying the eighties. The only place I get inspiration is from myself and my friends.”

This year’s fall/winter collection develops the previous season’s “New York architecture” and takes “the shapes of plants” as its theme. “From forms that people made, this time to forms that nature made. The structures and details of plants, like the shape of a seed pod, are like houses built by nature itself. To me, clothing is the smallest house there is, one that only a single person lives in.”

Ideas like this seem to flow freely out of Claudia’s hidden versatility. Her shows too unfold on many levels, through collaborations with film and music she directs herself, and with dancers, architects, artists, and photographers. “My message comes first in a show, and I believe it grows stronger through the different approaches my collaborators bring to it. I enjoy creating things together with friends I respect.”

The small sketchbook she always carries with her. “After I set a concept, I gather many images that reflect it, research them, and sketch them out flat.”

The cover of the image catalog for the fall/winter collection. It expresses images of plants born within nature through outdoor photography. For the show she collaborated with the artist Daisuke Nakayama.

She always plays music while she works, and she likes minimal, relaxing music. A tape a friend compiled for her includes many songs by Japanese musicians such as Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Ikeda.

CLAUDIA HILL
